Epilepsy & Seizures

What Are Seizures & Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder in which your brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. Symptoms of a seizure can include temporary confusion, a staring spell, uncontrolled jerking of arms and legs, loss of consciousness, and sudden rapid eye movement. Seizures are a symptom of epilepsy, but not all people who have seizures have epilepsy. About one in every one-hundred people will have an unprovoked seizure in their lifetime. About 4% of people will develop epilepsy in their life.
